The house · since longer than anyone here remembers
A neighbourhood salon on Roundhay Road.
Kiren's sits halfway up Roundhay Road, between the Oakwood Clock and the green spread of Roundhay Park. Two of the chairs near the window have been booked by the same regulars for the better part of a decade.
The shop runs on two halves. The front is the salon proper — cuts, colour, blow-dries, bridal — built on Kevin Murphy and Wella, finished by stylists most of our clients ask for by name. The back is a treatment room: facials, massage, ear candling, and the couples' booking we get more requests for than we expected.
The aromatherapy oils are blended in-salon, on the day, to the visitor's taste — calming, uplifting, something in between. The Murad and Sothys sit on a shelf at reception; clients ask, we explain, no one is sold to.
We've been on this stretch long enough that the receptionist remembers the names of the children of the women who used to come in. We'd rather you come back than book once and disappear.
On the shelf: Kevin Murphy, Wella, Murad, Sothys, OPI, CND, St Tropez, Marvelash. On the wall: a Kevin Murphy colour certification, framed because it took a year of sitting in classrooms to earn.
